The Malibu Colony
Malibu lore (and probably historical fact) has it that the Malibu Colony was originally called the “Malibu Movie Colony”, because it was a private, gated, enclave designed as a beach retreat for the Hollywood Movie elite. Today it is still one of Malibu’s only private, gated, security patrolled enclaves. These are beach houses, with some landside houses across the street, within the gates, and a stretch of beach houses that is outside the gates, but contiguous to the gated portion. I am not a huge fan of gated communities generically, but this is one that really does it well. There are two sections of the Malibu Colony, known as inside and outside the gates, and are exactly what they sound like: inside the gated area of the Malibu Colony; and outside the gated area of the Malibu Colony. The outside the gates portion of the Malibu Colony has a Malibu Road address but is still a part of the home owners association, which includes a very conscientious 24 hr a day security service (which will at times function as a bit of a concierge service allowing for keys and packages to be dropped and picked up, etc.). The sense of privacy, and security, along with some of the finest homes to be found on the beaches of Malibu have kept the Malibu Colony among the top of Malibu’s “A” list beach addresses for as long as I can remember. The Malibu Colony is also walking distance to what is considered to be the heart of Malibu with the major hub of shopping, restaurants, our local Malibu movie theater, Starbucks, the yogurt shop, surf shops, a grocery store, cleaners, florist, Post Office, and a world class surf spot called Malibu Surfrider Beach, which helped put Malibu on the map for surfing in the 50’s and 60’s. The Malibu Colony is a beach community that my father would refer to as “City by the Sea”.
