Point Dume is, as the name implies, a huge point that sticks out into the ocean in the slightly western from middle section of Malibu.  It is Malibu’s largest community on the ocean side of the Pacific Coast Highway, with somewhere in the vicinity of 500 homes.  If you look on a map of Malibu you can see Point Dume sticking out into the Pacific Ocean just east of Zuma Beach, and just west of Paradise Cove.  Point Dume is made up, by majority, of one acre plus home sites that were largely California ranch homes when they were first built back in the 50’s and 60’s, but have substantially been upgraded.  All around the border of Point Dume are bluff homes that look down on the ocean.  As a general rule of thumb, if you drew a line down the center of Point Dume, while facing the ocean, the homes on the eastern side have shared private beach access, through 4 different Rivierras, which are broken down by neighborhoods.  The homes on the right side use either Westward or Zuma Beach which are now public beaches.  Some of the bluff homes have direct private beach access, but most share access through the private gated (often guarded) beach paths.  The beaches here are a continuation of the Paradise Cove area so you have the same stunning, sheltered beach coves, sandy beaches, rolling beach bluffs and cliffs, and fantastic surfing, snorkeling, and diving.  Point Dume has a wonderful elementary school in roughly its geographic center, where my son is currently in school, and I could not be happier with the school.

I moved to Point Dume about 7 years ago and absolutely love living here.   I have spent quite a bit of time in my Malibu surfing life trying to figure out how to borrow a beach key to be able to get down to surf at Little Dume, (the main beach area in the private section of Point Dume.)   I have been pleasantly surprised that when you actually BUY a beach key, it often comes with a house on an acre or more of land, a fantastic community, and a truly blessed life!  This is a surfers and beach lovers paradise. Point Dume was largely put on the map by Johnny Carson, who owned one of the first substantial bluff homes to be build on Point Dume, but in recent years has become one of the most sought after communities in Malibu, and has a resident list of “A” list celebrities that could rival any in Malibu.   I don’t know if it is just my perception because my son goes to school here, but there seem to be a lot of young families living in Point Dume and there is a really nice family, community feel because of that.   Think beach community, with surfing, kids playing in the water, volleyball on the beach, barbeques, and bond fires in the summers, but at the end of the day everyone goes back to their own homes.  The direction of the coves causes them to be sheltered from the wind so they can be enjoyed well into the afternoon.  Point Dume still has a ton of the charm that I think of as old world Malibu, and as my father would say definitely falls into the “Country by the Sea” category.
